Tea Social for those interested in STUDY ABROAD

Tea Social

Who: You, that's who! Especially if you are interested in study abroad, study abroad alumni and
international students representing 6 continents and 18 countries.

When:
Friday, November 9, 2012
5:00pm - 7:00pm

Where:
Unit 1 Residence Hall, All Purpose Room

Details:

There will be three phases in this event:
Phase I - Attendees will grab some snacks, and tea while watching cool/funny/entertaining youtube clips that represent various countries.

Phase II - Popular songs from each of the represented countries will be playing in the background during this phase. Students will move from station to station spending no longer than 5-7minutes at each station. Each station represents a country and will consist of 1 international student and 1 study abroad alum. Station ambassadors will highlight the perks of living and studying in their country.

Phase III - All attendees will be encourage to grab some more snacks/tea and mingle. This will be a good time for prospective EAP students to hold more elaborate conversations with international students and ambassadors from countries that most interest them.

BSA Peer Advisers, an EAP Advisor and potentially a financial aid counselor will be in attendance and ready to answer any questions that you may have about logistics or the application process.


Why:
Hearing from the locals of the countries that you are considering as well
as from Cal students who have studied in those countries will give you
more insight, hence making the selection process easier and getting you
more excited about your decision.

This will also be a great networking opportunity for everyone.
International students will be able to meet and engage current Berkeley
students. Americans can potentially tap into an international students
network in their home country, and study abroad alumni can meet more
internationals and keep their international experience alive.

Cal Externship Program 2013

Hi Cal Opp Scholars!

Wanna check out a possible future career? Maybe learn more about your chosen field? An Externship is a chance for you to get an insider's view of a career field by shadowing Cal alumni at their workplace from one day up to 2 weeks during the January 2013 Winter Break!

What can you expect to do?? Observe the day-to-day activities of your Cal alumni sponsor, discuss specific jobs and careers with alumni and their colleagues, and sometimes obtain limited hands-on experience.
Externships are available in various career fields in San Francisco, Los
Angeles, San Diego, New York, Washington, DC and other locations.

*Externship Timeline:*
Now -- November 12, 2012:
Externship listings will be available for PREVIEW
November 13 -- November 26: 
Applications accepted from ALL students -- priority will be given to Freshmen and Sophomores, but all students will be considered
November 26: Applications due at 5pm -- no extensions!
Early December 2012: Externs selected and notified
January 7-18, 2013: Externship Period (anywhere from 1 day to 14 days)

The Leadership Alliance
Since 1992, the Leadership Alliance has encouraged students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities to pursue research careers in the academic, public and private sectors. The Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) provides undergraduates with training and mentoring in the principles underlying the conduct of research and prepares them to pursue competitive applications to graduate schools. The SR-EIP is a gateway to ongoing resources, mentoring and professional networks to support all participants along their chosen career path.

Program Structure
The SR-EIP is a rigorous research experience designed specifically for undergraduates interested in applying to PhD or MD-PhD programs.Students work for eight to ten weeks in the summer under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Leadership Alliance institution. Through one-on-one collaborations, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. All participants make oral or poster presentations of their research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium. Students receive a stipend, and travel and housing expenses are covered by the host institution.

Research Experiences
SR-EIP participants are engaged in scholarly research projects offered at 22 Leadership Alliance member institutions. These programs also offer research seminars and workshops in professional development, as well as social and cultural activities. The institutions set high standards and offer outstanding, closely mentored research experiences in a broad range of academic disciplines that are indicated in the “Research Sites” section of this brochure. 

With one common application, students can apply for a researchexperience at up to three of the 22 research sites (see chart).

Students should refer to each institution’s website for specific information on research opportunities and program requirements before submitting their application.

This would be a year-long internship with LIFT (offered by Hands On Bay Area aka HOBA which is partnered with Cal Corps).

By participating in this internship, you will:

• gain knowledge and leadership skills
• enhance your ability to create change in communities 
• and possibly receive a stipend at the end of internship
